A Local Controversy

This afternoon I drove Hubby's car to our favorite little automotive center.  He needed the oil changed and being the fabulous wife that I am I took care of it for him.  While there I picked up the local newspaper, the Roanoke Times and read an article about a local church that has erected 729 small white crosses that overlook the nearby highway so that passersby will see them.  Apparently it's been a controversy here in our area.

This little road leads up to one view of the crosses which the church states "are a symbol of redemption".  The local Planned Parenthood office sees them as a political statement representing the 729 abortions performed during the year 2008 between Allegheny and Roanoke counties.

I don't want to say a lot about it here because abortion is such a hot topic.  One that brings out unkind statements from otherwise lovely bloggers.  But I will say this....

For the money they spent on seven hundred and twenty nine crosses, the sign and what appears to be a lighting system, they probably could have put food in the bellies of quite a few live children who are in need.  Just sayin'.

Your piggy header made me giggle!

Couldn't have said it better myself. How about all the children who are HERE, NOW...and starving, being beaten, don't have clothes, don't have HOMES or FAMILIES!...Take care of just one of them! I'll stop here before I get ugly.

Reminds me of the phrase..."Put your money where your mouth is"...sometimes silence and doing the right thing does a whole lot more good. Love the piggy header...

How many of those people who spend so much time and money on fighting the right of other people to have abortions........how many of them have ever considered fostering or adopting any of the millions of kids out there who don't have a room of their own?
OMG< do NOT get me started.

I couldn't agree more. There are so many children in need, right now. Do something for them, instead of that useless display.

Love the header!

I will keep my opinions to myself on this hot topic. ;0)

I suspect the crosses have actually been put there by a Christiian denomination in rememberance of the abortions done by Planned Parenthood. They run abortion clinics.

Those babies didn't deserve to die and deserve to remembered. If your child died at child birth, wouldn't you be able to justify the expense of cross in memory of him or her?

Agreed.

Your new header is cute. I love that you change it often so that there's always a surprise waiting for us.

Couldn't agree with you more.

Great post. I appreciated your pictures because they really show what the story was talking about.

I've driven by the crosses and it's very sad to think of 729 babies not here anymore :(

Excellent point Di.

I went to Planned Parenthood my whole life since, thanks to the Republican nuts, I could never afford health insurance even though I've worked my whole life. Planned Parenthood enabled me to get affordable birth control. Therefore they actually helped PREVENT an abortion. Because if I had an unwanted pregnancy, say when I was a nineteen-year-old kid with no job, or a thirty-three-year-old single mom struggling to put food on the table by working three jobs and chasing an ex-husband for child support, I'll admit it, I would have aborted it. I would have had no choice. The cross people wouldn't have helped me raise it. They would have complained I was lazy if I needed food stamps or medicaid...

Amen to you for saying what you've said.

I am against abortion, but I am for the right to chose, and don't tell me you can't be both. You can because I am!
Hopefully most can make a decision other than abortion. It's easy to judge others and feel holier then thou about this subject.
Society, for the most part drove abortion underground and many, many women died in their desperate attempts to escape the criticism of society. If they want to put up crosses why don't they put up crosses for all those dead women?
How's that?
Just one more cruel thing that society thinks it's their place to do.
JUDGE NOT...
Just explain to me HOW those tiny crosses help. I happen to know that most of the women who have those abortions go through a horrible time...and usually for the rest of their lives.
No one has a right to do this cruel thing. Poor mom's and poor babies. Don't make it worse!

I knew a wonderful young woman once. And I knew her boyfriend who was a good friend of my boy friend. I was only 15 at the time.
She was one of the sweetest and dearest people I have ever known. She died in a train station, bled to death from a botched abortion.
She was just 18 years old. This was in 1952. The dark ages?

Ignorance is behind those crosses..well intentioned though they may be.
I say educate. Educate those that do that cruel thing and educate PEOPLE who are cruel to unwed mothers and maybe, just maybe some of those abortions wouldn't happen. Just sayin'

Thanks for the post Di.
Hugs and love,
Mona
p.s. And for the record I have never had an abortion or been pregnant and not wanted it. But I have known those who have.
No answer here...no agreement.

We had something like this in our area. They made their point, didn't they? And it does get people thinking.
