Chutzpah

Hubby:  Hey Di, what's this word?  Its spelled c.h.u.t.z.p.a.h.
The article is talking about AIG and how they want to sue the U.S. Government.

 Di:  Oh, that's chutzpah.

Hubby:  Well, what is it?  Even if I know the meaning of it I can't pronounce it because they put these marks over two little oo's with a little scoop mark over it.  What does that mean?

Di: They are telling you the sound that the 'u' makes, and I have no idea what the little sign means.  I do know that two oo's can have different sounds.  Like the oo's in broom or the oo sound in cook.

The word chutzpah means gall, arrogance, audacity; so they are saying that AIG has a lot gall to want to sue the US Government after we bailed their butts out.

Hubby:  Ya, they do have a lot of balls to be opening up that can of worms.
English was never my strong point.  Still isn't, so I don't get the two little oo's with the scoop thing above it.

Di:  Yep.  Now that you've looked up the word meaning you have to look up the 'oo' meaning.  Gotta love the English language.

I love this "yeahhh that's typical married folks!" ;) conversation AND any mention of Yiddish! To your dh: it sounds like you're bringing up phelgm - hoood - and then emphasis on the 2d word - PA as in PaPa
